Choosing the Perfect Event Space in Cork for Your Celebration
The right room can transform your celebration, here’s how to choose yours !
Birthdays, anniversariIn my last blog, I talked about what to do when you suddenly find yourself in charge of organising a family celebration.
Once you have a rough idea of your guest numbers, your date and the type of occasion you’re planning, there’s usually one big question that comes next:
What kind of room do we actually need?
It might sound like a simple decision, but choosing the right event space can completely change the atmosphere of a celebration.
One of the things I love about my job at Cork International Hotel is that no two enquiries are quite the same.
One day we might be helping a family organise an intimate christening lunch. The next, we could be planning a milestone birthday, a Communion or Confirmation celebration, a retirement party, an anniversary or a much larger event in our International Ballroom.
The important thing is finding a space that feels right for your occasion.
Here are a few things I always recommend considering.

Bigger isn’t always better
People sometimes assume that the larger the room, the more impressive the event will feel.
That isn’t necessarily the case.
A great event space should suit the number of people attending. You want enough room for everyone to feel comfortable, but you also want the celebration to have atmosphere.
For a smaller gathering, a more intimate setting can feel much warmer and more personal. For a larger occasion, you need a room that gives you the flexibility to comfortably accommodate your guests while still creating that sense of celebration.
This is why guest numbers are one of the first things I’ll ask about when someone contacts me.
You don’t need a final number. Even an estimate gives us somewhere to start.
Think about what will actually happen in the room
It’s not simply about how many chairs you can fit into a space.
Think about how you want to use it.
Will everyone be sitting down for lunch or dinner? Would you like an area where guests can mingle when they arrive? Will there be children attending? Are you planning entertainment? Would you like music later in the evening? Will you need space for a cake, gifts or decorations?
Two celebrations with exactly the same number of guests can require completely different spaces depending on what the hosts have planned.
That’s why I always encourage people to tell us as much as they can about the occasion rather than simply asking, “What room fits 50 people?”
The more we understand about the celebration, the better we can advise you.

At Cork International Hotel, we have options
One of the great advantages we have at Cork International Hotel is the variety of event spaces available.
For relaxed celebrations, Pacific Restaurant can provide a lovely setting where the emphasis is on getting everyone together and enjoying great food.
For family occasions and milestone celebrations, Atlantic Restaurant provides another option, while our International Ballroom allows us to cater for those much bigger occasions where you really want to bring a crowd together.
That flexibility is particularly useful because celebrations come in every shape and size.
A birthday doesn’t automatically mean a party.
A 50th wedding anniversary doesn’t necessarily need to be formal.
A Communion or Confirmation doesn’t have to follow exactly the same format as everyone else’s.
We can start with the occasion and then find the setting that works around you.
Don’t forget the people attending
When you walk into a beautiful event space, it can be very easy to focus entirely on how it looks.
But I always encourage organisers to think about how it will work for their guests too.
If grandparents or older relatives are attending, accessibility may be important. If there are lots of young families coming, you’ll have different considerations. If people are driving, parking suddenly becomes very relevant.
These practical details don’t sound particularly glamorous, but they make a huge difference to the overall guest experience.
At Cork International Hotel, complimentary parking and mobility-friendly access are two of those practical advantages that can make organising an occasion that little bit easier.
And because we are so used to welcoming families, we understand that an event needs to work for everyone from the youngest guest to the oldest.
Think about atmosphere, not just appearance
This is probably my favourite piece of advice when choosing an event space.
When you imagine the celebration, what does it sound like?
Is it a room full of family chatting over Sunday lunch?
Children running over to their grandparents?
Glasses being raised for a significant anniversary?
A room erupting into “Happy Birthday” for someone’s 60th, 70th or 80th?
Or is it music playing and a dance floor filling up later in the evening?
The best event space isn’t necessarily the one that looks most impressive when it’s empty.
It’s the one you can imagine filled with your people.

Let us show you the possibilities
You also don’t have to make these decisions from photographs or descriptions.
If you’re considering holding an occasion at Cork International Hotel, come in and have a look.
Tell us what you’re celebrating, how many people you’re thinking of inviting and what you have in mind.
Very often, once someone sees the different spaces and we start talking through the possibilities, everything begins to fall into place.
And don’t worry if you don’t have a complete plan.
That’s our job.
You bring us the occasion.
We’ll help you work out the rest.
Because whether you’re gathering 20 people for an intimate family celebration or bringing a much bigger group together for a milestone event, the aim is ultimately the same:
To create a room full of people who are delighted to be there.
And that’s when an event space really comes to life.
Coming next…
Of course, once you’ve chosen the room, there’s another very important part of the celebration to think about – the food!
In my next blog, I’ll share some of my advice on planning food for an occasion, from choosing a style of dining that suits your event to catering for different ages, tastes and dietary requirements.
