Celebrating Community Champions at the Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Awards 2025
There’s something special about communities that come together to recognise the people who quietly make a difference—and this year’s Community Spirit Awards at the Cork International Hotel did exactly that.
Now in its fifth year, the awards shine a spotlight on individuals and groups across Cork who go above and beyond to support their communities. From grassroots sports to cultural initiatives, the stories behind each winner are a reminder of the power of dedication and generosity.
A Well-Deserved Overall Winner
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of Helen Noonan as the overall winner for 2025.
For over 30 years, Helen has been at the heart of the Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League (CWSSL), serving as a Child Welfare Officer. While much of her work happened behind the scenes, her impact has been profound—supporting players, guiding families, and championing fairness and opportunity in the game.
Even as she steps away from her role with CWSSL, Helen continues her journey in football, now contributing at international level. It’s clear her passion for the sport runs deep, even within her own family, with her daughter Chelsea currently assistant manager of Birmingham City Women’s team.
Recognising Outstanding Contributions
The awards also celebrated two other remarkable individuals:
- Public Vote Winner – Trina O’Neill
As Chairperson of Kinsale AFC, Trina has spent over 13 years helping the club grow into a thriving community hub with nearly 1,000 members. Her leadership continues to inspire players and volunteers alike. - Lifetime Contribution Award – Barry Cogan
A former TD and Senator from Carrigaline, Barry has dedicated decades to community development. From founding the Carrigaline Community Association to supporting local sports, education, and cultural initiatives, his legacy is woven into the fabric of the town.
A Night of Inspiration
Speaking at the event, Eoghan Murphy, General Manager of the Cork International Hotel, highlighted the incredible impact of this year’s winners:
“The fifth annual Community Spirit Awards has helped to highlight some incredible people and organisations that add immense value to communities across Cork.”
Carmel Lonergan, Director of Group Operations at Trigon Hotels and a member of the judging panel, also praised the winners and acknowledged the challenge of selecting an overall recipient:
“The 2025 monthly winners have together dedicated decades of their lives to improving their towns and communities. Every monthly winner is deserving.”
