Air Fryer Churros with Salted Caramel Sauce
Serves: 6
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
🧈 Ingredients
For the churros batter
- 240 g water
- 50 g unsalted butter, diced
- 25 g white granulated sugar
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1 pinch nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 125 g all-purpose flour
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the cinnamon sugar
- 100 g white granulated sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
For the salted caramel sauce
- 200 g sugar
- 100 ml cream
- 50 g butter, diced
- 1 pinch sea salt
Method
Make the churro dough
- In a medium saucepan over medium–high heat, bring the water, butter, spices, salt, and sugar to a gentle simmer.
- Once the butter has fully melted, add the flour in one go and stir quickly with a spatula.
- Continue stirring until the dough becomes thick and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Transfer to a large bowl.
- Allow the dough to cool for 2–3 minutes.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing vigorously until fully incorporated.
- Spoon the dough into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle and pipe churros onto a lined baking tray.
- Chill the piped churros for 1 hour in the fridge or 10 minutes in the freezer to help them hold their shape.
Prepare the cinnamon sugar
- Mix the sugar and cinnamon together in a shallow bowl; set aside for tossing later.
Make the salted caramel sauce
- In a medium saucepan over medium–high heat, combine the sugar with a splash of water and stir to dissolve.
- Cook without stirring for 10–12 minutes, until deep amber in colour.
- Remove from the heat and carefully whisk in the cream — it will bubble vigorously.
- Add the butter, whisk until smooth, then season with sea salt to taste.
- Set aside to thicken slightly as it cools.
Cook the churros
- Preheat your air fryer to 190°C.
- Lightly spray the churros with sunflower oil.
- Air fry for 8–10 minutes or until crisp and golden.
- While warm, toss the churros in the cinnamon sugar.
✨ Serve
Pile the warm churros high and dip generously into the silky salted caramel sauce. Perfect for sharing during the Toy Show — if they last that long!
